Migration Information for Investors

A new migration policy for investors was implemented in July 2009. It is aimed at attracting people who can make a financial contribution to New Zealand, namely investors who want to invest large sums in New Zealand businesses or government.
There are two categories in which you can apply under the new Migrant Investment Policy, Investor Plus (category one) and Investor (category two). Applicants, and their spouses and dependent children, in both categories must meet the health and character standards of Immigration New Zealand.

Investor Plus (category one)

This category requires an investment of at least NZ$10 million for three years in New Zealand. You will have to provide evidence that these funds are owned by you (or jointly with your partner or children) legally, are unencumbered, and can be transferred through the banking system.
There is no upper age limit for this category, no English language requirement, and you do not need to demonstrate any business experience.
You will need to spend at least 73 days in New Zealand in each of the final two years of the three year investment period.

Investor (category two)

This category requires an investment of at least NZ$1.5 million for four years in New Zealand, as well as at least NZ$1 million settlement funds. Again, you will need to show that these funds are owned by you or jointly with your partner or children, were obtained legally, are transferable, and are unencumbered.

There is an upper age limit of 65 years in this category, and you must demonstrate a reasonable level of English. As well as that, you must have had at least three years relevant business experience.

You will be required to spend at least 146 days in New Zealand in each of the final three years of the investment period.

If you meet the criteria of one of these categories, you, your spouse/partner, and your dependent children may able to be issued with a residence permit.
